Around 2013, Jessica started making paintings with sculptural elements. Her obsession with wearable sculpture began with the Cartier animal jewelry, especially the panthere ring. She was inspired too by David Webb's work, loving his animal designs in particular. The combination of jewelry and figurative sculpture is irresistible.
"It took me a moment to get my head around carving, which is a process of reduction as opposed to resin sculpting which is a building process. You could break a window with the first cat ring I made!"
Our work is decidedly more raw and brutal than some of the jewelry that Jessica had admired in her initial exploration, connecting with the way she paints and sculpts. She says it has been a process learning to use her “hand” and refining pieces so they don’t literally weigh the wearer down, while still making a statement.
